My Story: Jill Walser

God Saw a Different Life for Me

I grew up in the same house in the same town in Indiana until I was 20 years old. I had a difficult childhood, and as a young person I was living life without God and making many choices that were not good. I didn’t care what I put into my body—like alcohol and drugs—and I didn’t care about being pure, either. These choices caused great damage in my life and made me feel so bad about myself. I was sure my life would never change, because I was too messed up.

After high school, before I moved away, I traveled for a year with an international singing group called Up With People. During that year I met three amazing girls who loved God and loved me. They not only loved me but also prayed for me. After we got home, I went to visit them and went to church with one of those friends. At the end of the service, her pastor asked if anyone was interested in finding out how Jesus Christ can be your personal Savior and free you from your sin.

I went forward, and I prayed with that pastor. From that moment, I knew my life would never be the same.

One of the first ways God showed His love for me was when I got home. I called my ex-boyfriend to tell him about my decision to follow Jesus and that I wanted things to be different between us. I was so excited when he told me he had also accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior only a month before. He is now my husband, Jeff, and we have been married for 30 years.

We have had many struggles during our marriage and with our kids, but we know that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins and that He is personally involved in our lives every day—helping us to learn how to be more like Him. God saw a different life for us, and we are so grateful. We look forward to serving our Lord in whatever ways He asks us to.

Getting to Know Jill

  1. Did you, as a child, ever run away from home?
Nope—too scared. I did pack my bags several times.
  2. What’s your favorite room in the house and why?
The kitchen—I like food, I like to cook, and I like that people always gather there, no matter how much space there is or isn’t.
  3. The gift I will never forget:
When a compassionate friend gave us plane tickets so we could get to California the day we lost our granddaughter to comfort our son and daughter-in-law. Words can’t describe the gratitude.
  4. What was your favorite food when you were a child?
Kentucky Fried chicken—we only got it about once a year when my grandma bought it. (My mom only served homemade fried chicken.)
  5. If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?
Belle, from Beauty and the Beast. She was smart and courageous. She took risks and loved the unlovely with pure love—and she could sing
  6. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
Worship songs, rock ’n’ roll and multicultural songs.
  7. Describe the last time you had an amazing meal.
Last Friday, Chinatown in downtown Chicago with our neighbor Yan. She ordered for us.
